Friday, June 28, 2002Just so everyone knows, many of you cannot access webmail. This is because our tech, instead of moving the DNS entries, decided to delete them and re-add them... But he didn't re-add the webmail subdomain. We didn't notice at first, not until DNS propigated. We had him add it back, but now we are waiting for it to propigate again.
POP mail still works, however. .: posted by Josh Sisk 2:24 PM
Thursday, June 27, 2002As noted on the front page, we are up and running like a bandit. The move went sorta smooth last night, with the only issue being getting a few IP's transfered to the new box, which whould only effect Wil Wheaton's sites (sorry dood). As also noted, the new server runs a newer version of the Berkeley DB than our old server, which causes MoveableType installs to not function. If you can't login or leave comments on your MT install, please let me know asap. I manually updated everyone's DB's that i could find, and i think i got them all unless you had more than one MT install.
So now, we wait for DNS to fully propagate. I can't see my site from work but i can from home, so DNS is slowly going around. The TTL for these domains was set to 5 minutes last night, so they should propagate more quickly than usual. Let us know if you notice any problems with anything after you can reach your site. I made every effort to triple check things, but i haven't had much sleep the past two days so if i missed anything... feel free to scream at me!! The speed improvement is very evident... your rebuilds and postings should go much quicker now, i've definitely noticed it as have a few others. Thanks again for reminding us we have the best users around. .: posted by Loren Cox 10:48 AM
Done and Done.
The entire Plesk server has been transfered to the new box, and the DNS changes have been made. I sure as hell learned a lot this time around... especially about how i ISP operates. There might be a few more tweaks to be made behind the scenes, but from the user standpoint all will be well as soon as the new DNS info propagates. Thanks again folks! .: posted by Loren Cox 12:11 AM
Wednesday, June 26, 2002Mental note... If i ever start an ISP... have the NOC (Network Ops Center) and the support staff in the same building.
Remember all that stuff i said below? Forget you ever read it. The servers are staying where they are... due to one little nicety that everyone sorta forgot about on their end. Our new server is too big to fit in the rack where the old server is. TADA! The magic answer. Everything i've been trying to do for the past 24 hours was worthless. So we're down to the only course of action we have left, which is what we wanted to avoid in the first place... but it's really not too bad. Basically we have to reassign every domain to a new IP address. The negative part of this is that some of you folks who have ISP's that are slow on the draw and don't update DNS too often might have to wait for the DNS to refresh before you have access, but that is normally under 24 hours. We're going to attempt to keep the old server running, just don't add any crucial data to your site, and it won't be migrated to the new box. All new data after tonight at 6pm won't be moved. The good news is that for us, this means we can do the whole switcheroo without waiting for Rackspace... all they have to do is move DNS IP's. Thanks for your support. -the jammin' guys .: posted by Loren Cox 2:23 PM
Alrighty. As usual... nothing having to do with servers is ever easy.
Here's the delio. The new server, and the old server are in completely different NOC's... like across town. So they have to coordinate moving the boxes so that they can swap IP's... because apparently Primary IP's can't be moved around, they are locked in place. SO. This means we'll be down for a while tonight. I, again, plan on staying up til all hours getting this thing working. Here's the schedule so far: -6pm PST the server is going down for backup and data migration -sometime between 8pm and midnight (good and specific eh?) they are going to move the server and reconfigure IP's -at which point i will restore Plesk on the new server, and we'll all live happily ever after. We suck for all this downtime, we know it. I wish we could afford a rollover server so this would all be seamless, but we just can't. If anyone has any major problems with the situation, please let us know by emailing support or catching me online on AIM: xskivviex. I'll be on all night tonight. .: posted by Loren Cox 1:42 PM
GRRRRRR... i'm majorly pissed right now. It's 3:45am, and the move was a no go after spending the entire night on this. Basically, our ISP gave us false info regarding the IP address transfers from one server to another. We were told it would be easy, change routing tables etc... but it turns out they actually have to swap the boxes out as the Primary IP's are hardwired. This presents a whole host of fun new problems that i won't go into. I'm bitching them out now, and i plan on attempting this again tomorrow night. The worst part is that we were at the point of just running one little command to restore the server and we'd be done, but now we have to do the entire backup and transfer again. At least this time it won't be as involved.
We as always are super apologetic about the downtime. We know this is ridiculous and shouldn't happen. Hopefully the new server will make up for it with speed and smoothness. Kill me now. zzzzzzzzzz .: posted by Loren Cox 3:43 AM
Tuesday, June 25, 2002IT'S ONLINE! I'm going to do the rollover tonight. Hopefully the only downtime we will have is during the backup process at which time the server will have to be stopped. This should only take 2-3 hours max... but these things never go smooth...heheh. I've done my prep work and planned it out, so hopefully this time it will. Speedy server here we come.

Monday, June 24, 2002Alrighty, the order for the new server has been placed. 1.53Ghz, 1 GB RAM, RedHat 7.2, Plesk 2.5, etc etc... It should be online tomorrow night, at which point i will be backing up everything and making the move to the new machine. We're still working out whether or not we can make this transfer seamless with our ISP. I'll post as soon as i know the details.

Monday, June 10, 2002Alrighty then folks....
After much research, pain, toil, a little suffering, and some torture sprinkled here and there... We are more than likely going to migrate to a new server within the next month. A few have noticed slowdowns in MovableType posting and rebuilds, and i'm sure some of you have noticed the qmail backlogs that we went through a few weeks back. So we've decided to get a server that is more than triple the power of the current Plesk box. As it stands, it SHOULD be a seamless transfer. Worst case scenario is a few hours downtime, but even that should be avoidable if everything goes smooth. So, in conclusion... shit should get much faster pretty soon. =] .: posted by Loren Cox 10:27 PM
Monday, June 03, 2002Fixed the incorrect information about pMachine on the front page. We now only offer it with an advanced account as it requires mySQL access. I've installed it, and wow. I'm very impressed. It's WAY faster than MoveableType or Greymatter, and way more flexible.
We are now offering $15 MoveableType installation. Email info@logjamming.com for, well.... more info. Duh. .: posted by Loren Cox 9:26 PM
