ANSWERS:

-2. How do i administer my website?

You have full access to the backend of your site through the Plesk interface, which is accessible by going to https://www.YOURDOMAINNAMEGOESHERE.com:8443/ (NOTE THE "S" IN HTTPS!!). Just type in your login and password, and you're set. Click the help button at the bottom right if you don't know what one of the buttons does.

-1.5. What if I forget my password?

Click here. Enter your domain name without the "www." and click submit. If it can't find your domain name, email support. (If nothing happens when you click on that word "here" in that first sentence, try disabling any pop-up blockers you may have, that link opens a pop-up window.) This will email your password to the email account associated with your account, so you hopefully have access to that email. If you don't, email support. This is why you should make sure we have your correct email.

-1. How do i get ahold of you bastards?

So you messed something up eh? General questions should be directed to support@logjamming.com.

0. I'm gonna be doing a weblog, what tools can i use and what do you support?

So you wanna be cool like us and have a 'blog eh? Welp, we definitely support you on that. Blogger is the old standby that's done us well, though it is suffering massive growing pains and can be slow at times. It's damn easy to use, and better yet all the scripting and database stuff is stored on their server, so all you'd need to do would be to set up the ftp to us. Graymatter and MoveableType are the other biggies out there, and they both require CGI access. We will allow CGI access ONLY for blogging tools and for nothing else unless you pay for an advanced account (see FAQ number 7 for more on this). We also support Manilla i'd guess, though i haven't tried it out since it's inception. It's a pain in the arse to use from my experience, but if you use it, more power to ya. We also support pMachine which is one of the most flexible tools out there. It requires an advanced account as it needs mySQL to run. If you have your own homebrewed blogging setup that needs something special to run, ask us to check it out, and we'll see what we can do fer ya. If you found something not listed here, feel free to ask us about it.

1. I wanna know how many peeps be spottin' my flow yo, how about some stats?

We thought you might want those, ya narcissist. Stats are available at:

http://YOURDOMAINGOESHERE.com/plesk-stat/webstat/

If that doesn't work you might have turned on password protection or something fun, so try putting an "S" after the http... https://YOURDOMAINGOESHERE.com/plesk-stat/webstat/

You can also access them by going through your control panel and clicking the REPORT button. From there you can access web and ftp stats, along with your total monthly traffic history.

Existing customers can still access logs pre-July by going to:

http://YOURDOMAINGOESHERE.com/webstat

See FAQ #28 for what's up with that.

(We use Webalizer by the way.)

2. My friends want to mooch email accounts, so how do i add more to my domain?

Just point your browser to https://www.YOURDOMAINNAMEGOESHERE.com:8443 (NOTE THE "S" IN HTTPS!!). Login, click your domain name, then the mail button, and edit away.

You get 5 accounts per domain for standard, 10 advanced, but we can alias as many as you'd like to one account.

3. How much transfer bandwidth do i get and what if i go over my alloted amount?

As it stands we are allowing 300 MB of transfer per month per domain for a Standard Account, and 1 GB of transfer per month per domain for an Advanced Account. That includes FTP, mail, and web traffic OUTGOING from the server. We have a limited amount of bandwidth prepayed on each of our server, so if you are the contributing factor to us going over that limit, we WILL ask for a few bucks to cover it, which isn't much at all. To be precise, we charge $4/GB over your alotment that you go. Basically, don't get to popular =]

4. Do you guys provide backup service for my site, 'cause i don't trust you bastards for one second?

The answer is no, and yes. Here's the deal. We don't do backups on the server... however, if you want backups done of your domain, there's ways of going about it. You can back it up yourself via FTP whenever you remember to do so (some FTP clients have schedulers for just this thing). Just remember, that if you go over your bandwidth alotment, it'll cost you $4/GB over that you go.

Will i back up your site for you on my machine? No. Nuh uh. No way. I don't wanna be responsible when your site gets lost and my machine didn't happen to be on that night. Just be responsible about it and keep local copies of everything you do. If you use blogger, no worries, you can always just republish.

5. Does my domain have it's own IP address?

Nope. But it can. We are using Virtual Hosting, which is why we can do this for so cheap. Basically that means we host multiple domains under each IP that we have. If you need to have your own IP address for your domain, no problem. It'll cost you an extra $4.00 a month.

6. I'm a scripting master, can i use PHP?

Sure. We have some resident PHP peeps, so if you have some question about why something isn't working on your domain, email us.

7. I'm an old school scripting master, can i use CGI or ASP?

Yes, if you want to have access to CGI (for anything other than a blogging tool), ASP for Apache, and MySQL, get the advanced account which is $10/a month.

8. I want do do some funtimes database stuff using SQL, can you hook me up?

Yes, we now have an advanced account which includes ASP. MySQL and CGI access, for $10/month.

9. My website is ballooning out of control and i need more space, what do i do?

That can probably be arranged. 100 Megs is plenty of space for a dinky website, unless you are serving up MP3's or PRON, both of which aren't allowed anyhow. If you can justify why you'd need more space, let us know and we'll work something out. We aim to please.

10. You guys just plain suck and i'm tired of your crap, how do i cancel my account?

We understand. We do our best not to suck, but admit that at times we do a little sucking here and there. If our suckage is so great that you can't stand it anymore, by all means cancel your account, you will be refunded the remainder of your yearly subscription less the paypal fees. 'Cause hey, we don't suck THAT much.

11. What do i do when i'm not feeling popular?

Incesently email other bloggers asking them to add you to their links on their sites, it'll do wonders for your popularity and hits. Silicon lip injections are all the rage too, don't forget about those. I also hear that studded punk rock belts attract the opposite sex like flies to dung, so there's always that. Oh yeah, PIERCE SOMETHING! You'll make instant friends wondering "did that hurt?!"

12. Can I park a domain? How about subdomains?

Yes, you can park multiple domains and subdomains on your site, all pointing to your main site. It's just going to use a standard forward to your existing domain. We allow you to park one domain for free, then we charge $10 per domain after that. The reason we have to charge is that each domain takes up one domain license within plesk, with which we have a limited number of licenses per server.

13. How do I pay for all this? How much does it cost?

This page explains it, but the short version is that it's $60 a year for a basic account and $120 for an advanced account, and you can send us the money via paypal. All payments should be made throug our billing system. When you sign up, you'll be taken through the steps to pay through Paypal. For renewals please pay through the billing system by going to the accounts area.

14. Why can't i send email from my webmail account?

You probably didn't set your Options. Login to webmail, http://webmail.YOURDOMAINHERE.com. You'll need to click on preferences and fill out the info there. Remember to Sign Out if you are on a public computer.

14.5. Why can't i login to my webmail account?

One of two reasons...

1 - You have your email forwarded, in which case you don't have a webmail account to recieve webmail to. Duh. =]

2 - The domain your trying to access webmail for is forwarded to another domain.

If it's neither of those reasons, triple check your login and password in the admin area and if all else fails, email support.

15. How can i tell which one of your servers my domain is on, Logjamming2 or Logjamming3?

Easy: When you login to the admin area (Plesk), you'll either see a little subscript 2 or 3 under the logjamming banner at the top.

(Background: We got bigger than we thought, faster than we thought, so we had to add another server... well, that and hosting wilwheaton.net did wonders for crashing our server quite often due to its popularity. So, all of the accounts are now on one of two Plesk managed RedHat Linux servers. One isn't necessarily better than the other, so don't worry about which one you are on. The only real difference you'll notice is that number.)

16. I'm setting up MoveableType, how do I install it on your server?
This is how to install MT with the standard Berkeley DB, NOT the mySQL version. As of this writting the current MT version is 2.21. I've chopped it down to the most relevant info for our server, so if you need more detailed install info or don't know how to do something i describe, go to the MT Install Guide. Note that this isn't necessarily the ONLY way to install it, it's just the simplest most organized way for our server.

Configure

1. Download and unpack MoveableType. You shouldn't need the version with all the libraries included, as they are installed on our servers already.

2. Open "mt.cfg" in your favorite text editor.

3. Change the line that reads
CGIPath http://WWW.YOUR-SITE.COM/PATH/TO/MT/
to read
CGIPath http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/mt/
making sure to change "yourdomain" to actually read YOUR domain name. Duh. And don't forget the last "/".

4. Change the line that reads
DataSource ./db
to read
DataSource /home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/db
making sure to change "yourdomain" to actually read YOUR domain name. Got that yet? No "/" needed at the end.

5. Change the line that reads
# StaticWebPath /path/to/static-files/
to read
StaticWebPath /mt-static/
making sure to delete the "#" at the beginning of the line.

6. Save the "mt.cfg" file and exit your text editor.

Create directories

1. Connect to your website with your FTP program of choice.

2. Go to the "cgi-bin" directory, and create a new directory named "mt" and another named "db".

3. Go up out of the "cgi-bin" directory and into the "httpdocs" directory. Now create two new directories, one named "mt-static" and one named "mt-archives".

Upload files and set permissions

1. Go into the "mt-static" directory, and upload the "images" and "docs" directories, and the "styles.css" file. Make sure "images" goes up in binary mode, and "docs" and "styles.css" go up in ASCII mode.

2. Go to the root of your site and into the "cgi-bin", then into the "mt" directory. Upload everything else here ("lib", "schemas", "tmpl", "index.html", "LICENSE", "LICENSE-COMMERCIAL", "mt.cfg", "mt.cgi", "mt-add-notify.cgi", "mt-check.cgi", "mt-comments.cgi", "mt-db-pass.cgi", "mt-load.cgi", "mt-send-entry.cgi", "mt-tb.cgi", "mt-xmlrpc.cgi") all in ASCII mode.

3. Set the permissions of all of the CGI scripts (files whose names end in .cgi) to 755. Permissions set to 755 means that all users on the system have Read and Execute permissions; only the owner should have Write permissions.

If your FTP client uses a graphical display for setting permissions, that display will look something like this:

755

4. Set the permissions on "mt-static" and "mt-archives" directories to 755, then set the permissions on the "db" directory to 777 in the same way as above.

5. Close your FTP program. weee!

Initialize and setup MT

1. Point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-load.cgi.

If you get a 500 Internal Server Error when running this script, first check that you set the permissions to 755 (see above for what this means), and that you uploaded the file in ASCII mode. If these suggestions don't help, refer to MT's Troubleshooting section.

If successful, mt-load.cgi will report its success. If unsuccessful, it will report the error that occurred; look in Troubleshooting for instructions on how to fix the error.

2. Point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi

Log in with the author name Melody and the password Nelson.

3. The first thing you should do is change your author name and password. To do so, click Edit your profile, then change the author name and password there.

4. Now do a few quick configs on your first blog.
Click on the link to "First Blog" under Your existing blogs, then click the "Blog Config" button on the menu to the left. Change the name of the blog to whatever you wish to call your blog, and enter a description.

5. Change the "Blog name" to whatever you want your blog to be called.

6. Change the "Local Site Path" to
/home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/httpdocs
7. Change the "Local Archive Path" to
/home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/httpdocs/mt-archives
8. Change the "Archive URL" to
http://www.yourdomain.org/mt-archives/
9. Everything else is up to you. That should do it for basic setup!

If you can't get it running, and have read their entire manual, install guide, and searched their support forum 'til your eyes bleed... THEN you can feel free to email support@logjamming.com and we'll help you out. Note that this is not a normal support issue, as our servers are configured to work with MT, and i myself use it daily. In other words, if it's not working, 99.9% chance it's on your end, not ours. If the support gets excessive, we'll have to charge for our time, sorry, but we're busy folk.

We can also install MT for you for a fee if you don't want to deal with it. Email us and ask if you're interested.

17. I'm setting up GreyMatter, what do i need to know to get it to work with your servers?

You're going to need to know the absolute path to your site directory to properly setup your configuration options. The absolute path to the root of your site is as follows:

/home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/

So you'll need the following paths for your configuration options if you are on server 2:

Local Log Path: /home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/httpdocs
Local Entries/Archives Path: /home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/httpdocs/pathToYourArchiveDir
Local CGI Path: /home/httpd/vhosts/yourdomain.com/cgi-bin

Make sure you replace the "yourdomain.com" part. Got it?

Another problem that seems to pop up randomly is people getting "premature end of script errors" when they run GM. If you recieve this error the first time you try and access gm.cgi, simply add "-w" (no quotes) to the first line of gm.cgi, which is the pointer to where perl is on the server. So it should end up looking like this:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

That should fix it right up.

18. Why do my CGI's show up as plain text?

This usually happens when you try to run a CGI in your httpdocs directory. Make sure ALL CGI's are in your CGI-BIN directory.

19. How do i setup a database if i've got an advanced account?

Super easy. Simply go to https://www.yourdomain.com:8443 (don't forget the S in httpS!). This will bring you to the Plesk login screen, which is where you can administer your domain's email and databases. Login, and you'll be brought to a list of your domains. Click the domain you want to add/modify a database on. Then click the Databases button. If you are adding a new database, type it into the Database Name form and click the Add button. You'll then have to create a user and password for that database. Once you have your database created, simply click on the name of the DB you want to mess with, and click the PHPMYADMIN button, which will pop up a window allowing you to edit your database with PHPMyAdmin. If you don't know how to use it, then search around the web and read the docs, it's pretty self explanatory though. We can't provide too much support for it, so do your best to figure it out on your own. Make sure you log out of the Plesk interface when you are done!

20. I'm having problems figuring out how to setup my DNS with DomainMonger.com...

If, when registering your domain with domainmonger.com, you didn't see a place to enter our Primary and Secondary DNS, here's how to go back and set it up.

Go to domainmonger.com. Click "login" at the top of the screen. After you've logged in, click the "Name Servers" link at the top, or "Manage Name Servers" at the bottom. Scroll down to the "Adding New Nameservers" area. First, enter "ns.rackspace.com", then "ns2.rackspace.com". You can then check "remove" on the DNS servers that were already there, if they haven't been replaced by the new rackspace DNS servers. If you have any problems with this email us and we'll see if we can help.

21. Can I make my own custom 404 error page or forbidden error page?

Hells YEAH. If you look in the root of your site, you will see a directory called "error_docs" which contains guess what... the error docs. When people type in your domain and try a file that doesn't exist, they'll get a 404 error page, which is named "not_found.html" in your "error_docs" directory. You also have "bad_request.html", "forbidden.html", and "internal_server_error.html". You can change these to whatever your little heart desires.

22. You said we can't have porn, warez or MP3's... what does that mean exactly?

Okay, here's the deal.

Porn: We don't mind "erotic" photos or drawings of stories on your sites as long as they are your own and not someone else's copywritten material. What we DO mind is a huge directory full of porn that gets thousands of downloads a day, anything copywrited, or anything that would make us want to kick your ass because you are a disgusting pervert (i.e. kiddie porn or the likes). We won't tolerate it and we will shut down your site and notify proper authorities if we deem it necessary. If you wanna put up your own erotic photos, drawings, or stories, go for it. Just be prepared to pay the bandwidth if you get tons of hits.

MP3's: Pretty much the same rules apply. As long as they are YOUR MP3's... meaning YOU produced the music or speech contained within, we have no problems with it. If you want to put up a favorite MP3 of yours every once and a while, well we're fine with that too. What we DON'T want is to be an MP3 file server, or be busted for storing copywritten music. If you have your own music (or the music of a band you are doing a site for for instance), then as long as you are willing to pay for bandwidth, we have no problems with it.

Warez: You get the picture. If it's yours, meaning you coded it with your own little fingers, fine. Otherwise, unless it's GPLed correctly or freeware, nuh-uh. Bandwidth blah blah...

23. What is the path to sendmail on the Plesk server?

"/usr/bin/sendmail" for Logjamming 2

"/usr/sbin/sendmail" for Logjamming 3

if one doesn't work use the other.

Greymatter asks for this path, but it's not required. You can also use sendmail for formail etc...

24. How do I set file permissions without command line / telnet access... can I use an FTP client?

Yes, you can use an FTP client to set file permissions. Most "modern" FTP clients allow you to do this (i.e. CuteFTP, WS_FTP, LeechFTP, etc...). Check thier docs to see how.

25. Can you redirect a subdomain somewhere

Subdomains are the little names before the domain... like www, ftp, webmail, etc. YES, we can create and redirect subdomains to other domains. NO, we cannot direct subdomains to directories in your website... meaning we can't send dork.yourdomain.com to a folder in your site with pictures of your dorky brother in it.

26. Can you handle SSL (secure socket layer) pages so i can do credit cards and stuff?

Yeah we can handle SSL stuff. Just make note of your requirements in the comments section when you signup, or contact support if you are already a customer. We will however require an 80% cut on all credit card transactions going through our server, and for you to provide the credit card numbers to us.

Just kidding on that last part.

27. I want to setup Gallery and/or i'm having PHP Safe Mode problems?

PHP Safe Mode is enabled on our servers. We allow Gallery to be installed, which requires it to be off. If you'd like to install Gallery simply email support@logjamming.com and we'll do some magic trickery that lets Gallery work on your domain.

If you require some other script or whathaveyou to have safe mode off... we'll consider it on a case by case basis. Email support about it and we'll let ya know.

28. My stats page stopped updating in July... what's up with that?

There's a new statistics structure that was introduced when we upgraded to Plesk Reloaded. See FAQ entry #1 for the updated locations

Sorry for this change, it sucks and Plesk didn't make this known to any of it's clients before the upgrade. Plenty of folks are pissed about it.

29. How do I pay this bill/invoice I got from you guys?

You can login to our BILLING AREA by... well... clicking on those words back there, the capitalized ones.

Once logged in, click the number next to "Total Due", then click the invoice number. From there you can click the "PAY WITH PAYPAL" button to pay, and see more info on the invoice.

30. How do I change the email address that is on record with my account?

Login to the Accounts/Billing area at https://www.logjamming.com/accounts with the existing email address as your login. Once logged in, go to the "My Info" menu in the upper left and choose "Update My Info." The rest should be pretty self explanatory! NOTE that when you change this email address, you are also changing your login.

PLEASE DON'T use and email address that is a part of the domain you have with us (i.e. if we host coolman.com for you don't use joecool@coolman.com as your email address... if there is a problem with your domain or DNS or something similar and we need to reach you, we won't be able to!)
